Invokana Class Action Lawsuit For Ketoacidosis, Heart attack, and Stroke

The Abbott Law Group, P.A. is currently filing Invokana lawsuits on behalf of patients who took Invokana (Canagliflozin) and other SGLT2 inhibitors such as Farxiga and suffered a significant injury.

New information has been released by the FDA and several studies have revealed that Invokana may be responsible for a very serious condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA.

This condition may require hospitalization and could become life threatening or even fatal if not treated right away.

Many patients who were diagnosed with ketoacidosis may have also suffered a stroke, heart attack, or renal failure before the ketones or acids in the blood could be brought under control.

The injuries related to the use of Invokana are serious and pantients may qualify for the Invokana class action lawsuit if they meet the criteria.

Brief Description

What Exactly Is Ketacidosis?

Ketoacidosis is a potential life threatening condition when cells in the body are not able to get enough glucose because not enough insulin is produced by the body. When the sugar cannot get inside the cells, they remain in the blood though some amount might get filtered by the kidneys.

Though people use Invokana and Farxiga for controlling diabetes and helping the body to maintain normal levels of blood sugar, there have been many instances where many people have suffered from Ketacidosis because of use of this drug.

The drug when used in spite of early symptoms of Ketacidosis could lead to heart attack, kidney failure, stroke and various other types of diseases. This is why so many Invokana lawsuit's are being filed, because the manufacturers failed to warn consumers about undisclosed side effects.

Ketoacidosis occurs when the kidneys start releasing increased quantities of glucose through the urine. Afterwards there is artificial reduction in blood sugar while the cells continue to be deprived of sugar and glucose.

The symptoms of DKA may only show after blood sugar levels have reached alarming proportions.  Here are a few symptoms to look out for as recommended by the FDA warning.

  • Hot and dry skin that is flushed
  • Vision that is blurred always
  • Unusually high thirst and too much of urination.
  • Drowsiness and difficulty in waking up.
  • Bad mouth odor
  • Deep and rapid breathing and much more.

How Ketacidosis Could Lead To Multiple Organ Failure

One of the major concerns that the Invokana class action lawsuit addresses is that SGLT2 inhibitors could lead to multiple organ failure.

Ketoacidosis affects the kidney directly because of the overworked nephrons. When this happens, the kidneys have to work harder to filter out sugar and glucose. Over a period of time the kidneys start failing. Once kidneys enter into the final stages of failure, they could potentially be responsible for an increase in blood pressure. If this happens, it could have a cascading impact on the heart which could develop into a heart attack or other serious problems.

Another complication that could occur with ketacidosis is that it the brain may increase fluid retention, causing swelling of the brain. This is a potentially dangerous situation, and the swelling could lead to a stroke or sudden death caused by cessation of brain function.
